ITV bosses have confirmed Carla (Alison King) and Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) will go their separate ways on Coronation Street this Christmas as the fan-favourite struggles to come to terms with murdering cobbles killer, Stephen Reid.

Peter shocked the nation last month after he took matters into his own hands and ran over cobbles killer Stephen Reid just moments before he could escape in a getaway car. Since then, the doting husband has been battling with the guilt after the police dropped their investigation against him.

Now, Iain has confirmed the hunk will bid farewell to the ITV cobbles but reassured fans that they have left the door open for his return in the future. He told us : “Well, what we wanted to do with Peter was try and play the reality of a man who’s got demons. It’s fair to say he’s got a history of alcoholism and depressive episodes.

“His reaction to what he did to Stephen was concerning. He has a battle with himself to get straight in his own mind whether what he did was justified, whether it was necessary or how much of it was actually informed by his anger over what Stephen had done to Carla.

“Was there an element of revenge there? And obviously, that puts him on the rack emotionally speaking.” It’s at this point that fans will see Peter struggle to hide his emotions from Carla as their relationship slowly breaks down in the build up to Christmas.

He went on: “There’s a few explosive Peter Barlow-style outbursts that start to bring to Carla’s attention the idea that he’s really not okay. They find themselves at this enormous fork in the road where they love each other but perhaps their happiness is no longer reliant on each other.

"It all builds up to this really, I think incredibly surprising Boxing Day episode, and there's a huge two-hander between the two of them, they're more or less the only two cast [members] in the episode. It's a kind of greatest hits compilation for those of you that have been big fans of Peter and Carla since the start, that picks over every single detail of who they are, what they've been as a couple, what they want for their futures, what happiness looks like for them.

"As we know, it's building towards an exit for Peter which is really brilliant and bittersweet and feels like Corrie at its very best. We often think of Peter and Carla as the kind of Burton and Taylor of the cobbles. We wanted to have this kind of grand scale, highly emotional, very nuanced, very realistic ending, which is what I think, what the writers achieved and it's filming right now. I cannot wait to see the result if it's even half as good as the script."

Iain went on to celebrate the two actors and credited them for their impressive acting on set. He added: "It's going to be a really stunning Christmas episode for us because they're brilliantly loved characters, brilliant actors, and it's the culmination of a kind of decade long love story so I think the viewers are going to really love it."

Despite the heartbreaking ending, the producer reassured viewers Carla won’t be able to wallow in her heartbreak for too long before a new arrival turns her world upside down when they arrive in Weatherfield. It comes after new pictures appeared to show how Peter will leave the soap.

The ITV soap is currently in the process of filming the sad farewell scenes, which are expected to air on Boxing Day this year and it appears Peter will leave the cobbles on a tram. Chris has been spotted filming aboard Manchester's Metrolink with the tram heading towards Piccadilly, suggesting he will set off for pastures new away from the city.

Chris was previously asked how he felt when he found out that it was Peter who finished off Stephen, he said: "It was Iain [MacLeod] the producer who told me and I was not expecting it that's for sure.

"But I was pleased and I was keen to see how the story would pan out. When I read it, I loved that it kind of came out of nowhere, hopefully, it was not something the audience was expecting.

"It just came together at the right time. I've learned a bit more about Peter than I knew before. The more that I know, the more that I see this side of him, the more I like him. He's got a lot of depth and it has been great to explore that."

It comes after Alison King shares her heartache over his exit. She told us: ""I hate it when he leaves me. It's horrible but luckily, I just hand him over to his normal wife, let her have him for a bit and then he can have his on-screen wife for a bit.

"So it never feels like we're far away from each other because we know each other so well now."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV1 from 8pm or catch-up on ITVX.
