Corrie star reveals why Daniel and Daisy are meant to be together for good

It’s been a rocky path to romance for Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) and Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) in Coronation Street, but it looks like happiness is finally within their reach – and it comes in the wake of a health scare for Daisy when she finds a breast lump.

Although this news is really tough for Daniel to cope with as he fears history is about to repeat itself after the death of his wife Sinead from cancer, it does focus his mind as to his priorities, as Rob Mallard explained.

‘I don’t think he quite realised the depth of his feeling towards her until there was the chance that it would be taken away,’ he admitted. In the wake of this, Daniel decides to propose.

‘The realisation that having this event presented to them, a possible cancer scare, making him realise what he actually feels for her, and then going, “Well, I might as well do this then,”’ Rob said. ‘Because what’s the point in in holding out if you know how you feel?’

Rob says that following Sinead’s death his grieving character was looking for someone who was a replacement for his wife. ‘After Sinead it was all Sinead replacements. It was Bethany, and then Nikki. And they were all substitutes for what he’d lost,’ he explained. But with Daisy, it’s completely different.

‘This is because Daisy is a completely different character to Sinead,’ Rob said. ‘There’s enough depth and difference between them, for them to both be kept interested in each other.’

Rob summed up this difference as, ‘He’s books and learning and teaching. And she’s selfies and shoes,’ but emphasised that Daisy also has the maturity to fit into a family role with Daniel and his young son Bertie.

‘It’s a big ask for someone at that age to take on someone who’s got as much baggage as Daniel does, so it’s a dream for him, basically. Because that’s what he’s focused on, his family. That’s his main focus.’

As to whether Daisy and Daniel’s relationship will last, Rob was cautious. On the one hand he said, ’He’s a one person person. He’s not one of these people that goes, “Oh, this will do for now.” He very much thinks about what we’re going to look like, what’s it going to be like together when we’re old?”’

But on the other hand, he is the son of Ken Barlow, a man who was famously a one-woman man – until a more interesting woman happened along to distract him for a while.

‘By nature, he’s definitely a Barlow,’ Rob said of his character. ‘So I imagine if he met a woman who was really close to him in terms of interests, and if things weren’t going too well with him and Daisy, who knows? Who knows?’

But for now it looks like the immediate future, at least, is promising for Daisy and Daniel.
