He captioned the post: "Happy 40th birthday to BBC Breakfast. It was a real privilege to sit on the famous sofa for 6 years."

The former BBC presenter concluded with: "Also… Carol is the best."

Carol, 60, joined BBC Breakfast in the summer of the show’s launch in 1983 as a production secretary.

She then left and returned a few times over the years in different roles before joining the show as a weather presenter in 1998.

Carol is now the longest-serving presenter on BBC Breakfast – which celebrates its 40th anniversary this week – and has had her share of embarrassing blunders while on air.

The BBC's morning output has been celebrating its 40th birthday this week and host Jon Kay feared he and co-star Sally Nugent could be 'arrested' following the wild office antics.

Jon and Sally both admitted to shovelling cake into their mouths inside the BBC's Salford studios as part of the big birthday blowout on Tuesday.

However, their admission was soon put under scrutiny by one of the show's guests and an aptly-timed newspaper article.

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
