The third and final season of Dead to Me has finally been released on Netflix this week following an agonising two-year wait. Jen Harding (played by Christina Applegate) and Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini) are back and in more trouble than ever, and showrunner Liz Feldman has admitted she had some major reservations heading into the thrilling series’ final season.
Writer and executive producer Liz revealed she’s unsure how fans will respond to Dead to Me’s closing episodes.
Season three will pick up right where the second outing left off, after a shocking hit-and-run caused by none other than Steve’s twin brother Ben Wood (James Marsden).
Meanwhile, Steve’s body has just been uncovered in the Angeles Forest, and the police are hot on Jen and Judy’s trail.
Fans are desperate to find out how the unlikely duo will escape capture, and Liz has promised the ending will remain true to what they have come to love about the series.
However, she also admitted she’s “slightly terrified” about how devoted viewers will respond to the finale.
“I really just wanted to honour the place from which the show was born,” she explained.
“Which was my own grief and my own grappling with some really major losses in my life. Honestly, my biggest hope is that [audiences] do feel.”
Despite Dead To Me’s comedic tone, the series has always tackled heavy themes of loss and self-destruction throughout Jen and Judy’s unpredictable antics.
Season three will be no different, and Liz has teased a final season which will pack a powerful emotional punch whilst still delivering the laughs.
“That has been one of my aims this whole time,” she told TV Insider. “I think maybe because I come from such a comedy with a capital C background.
“I was always itching for those shows, and those narratives that I’ve worked on in the past, to make you feel something more deeply than just a fleeting laugh.”
Spoilers won’t be revealed here, but, thankfully, all 10 episodes of Jen and Judy’s final caper are now available to stream on Netflix.

Season three arrives slightly later than expected, in part due to delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Production was also pushed back to account for Christina’s diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, during which she has received plenty of support from the cast and crew.
“I’m most proud of the relationships that I was able to form during the making of this show,” Liz explained.
“Both in the writers’ room and in production, and, you know, specifically with Christina, and Linda.
“I think that it’s really easy to get caught up in wanting to be successful. And you know, getting all of your self-worth from how many people watch your show, how people review it.”
“For me, those things are awesome, but they’re temporary. And they kind of come and go and they don’t really stay with you in terms of a lasting feeling.
“But those relationships, those friendships that I was able to form and that I watched other people form along the way, that’s what really matters.
“That’s what matters in the end, you know? It’s the people that stay with you. And that’s, I think, what I’m most proud of.”
Although viewers have only had three seasons to get to know Liz’s cast of flawed and colourful characters, Dead to Me will certainly be remembered as a high point in the cast and writer’s careers.
