Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) finds herself all alone in upcoming episodes of Coronation Street after Fern (Gabrielle Glaister) takes her clothes and ID and poses as her to commit theft.

Using Bernie’s identity, Fern took a job with a high-end cleaning agency and went for a shift at a jewellery shop. The owner left ‘Bernie’ to lock up at the end of her shift.

In upcoming episodes Fern is left alone in the shop, and she seizes the opportunity to take as much of the merchandise as she can.

Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) and Bernie are shocked when a police officer approaches them and arrests Bernie on suspicion of theft.

At the police station she is shown the CCTV footage which apparently shows her robbing the jewellers. Bernie tries to explain about Fern looking exactly like her and stealing her identity, but the whole story sounds completely bizarre and the phone number she gives them for Fern is out of service.

She’s released pending further enquiries, with no idea how she’s going to prove her innocence.

And that’s when Dev steps up to support her. He helps her to go through the recycling until she finds she label from the clothes packaging with Fern’s address on it. They go off to the address, hoping to confront Fern, but are disappointed when they can’t locate the address.

With her family turning against her because of what they think is a ludicrous story to cover yet more dodgy behaviour, Dev suggests that Bernie should move in with him.

Can Bernie clear her name?
