Eamonn Holmes on moment BBC co-stars stopped him being replaced by Gary Lineker

During Monday’s instalment of GB News, presenter Eamonn Holmes recalled when his colleagues at the BBC stopped him from being replaced by Gary Lineker.

The revelation comes following the discussion of Des Lynam’s recent comments surrounding the Match of the Day star.

With Des suggesting Gary should stick to sport rather than airing his political opinions, Eamonn confessed the 62-year-old had a shift in attitude after he stepped into the world of presenting.

He said: “Prior to that, there were anchors, people like David Coleman, Frank Bough, Dickie Davies, Des Lynam.

“After Des, it was sports hosts who anchored all the programmes. You had to have competed at some level or been involved in sport.”

Eamonn admitted that although it’s good to have someone passionate about the sport they’re presenting, an expert in that field isn’t always needed.

Reflecting on how this almost happened to him, the GB News presenter added: “I used to host snooker for the BBC.

“And I was being replaced, they wanted to replace me with Gary Lineker.”

The Northern Irish host shared that those working on the show Pot Black decided to step in to save his job.

He continued: “I was lucky that the snooker players (a bit) like a union got together and said, ‘No, no, we like Eamonn.’

“And actually it’s a tremendous tribute to me that they said, ‘No, we want Eamonn to stay.’

“They had that power that meant I stayed on hosting snooker which was a great compliment.”

However, it looks like there were no hard feelings between Eamonn and Gary as the GB News host called him a “top man” and host.

Eamonn presented the BBC snooker show between the years 1991 and 1992, taking over from David Icke.

However, in 1993 Eamonn was replaced by David Vine who also hosted Senior Pot Black in 1997.

After his time on the sports show, Eamonn moved in a different direction when he join GMTV in 1993 alongside Anne Davies.
