Over the past few weeks, fans of the BBC soap have noticed Ben Mitchell’s (played by Max Bowden) partner Callum Highway (Tony Clay) continuously air his concern about how much Ben seems to be drinking. However, eagle-eyed viewers have noticed the EastEnders character isn’t eating much when drinking, which would suggest a potential eating disorder on the cards.

One of the first signs of trouble was when the duo decided to ask Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) if he’d join them at Peggy’s for a curry and drink.

While there, Callum realised Ben hadn’t really touched his food and urged him to go easy on the alcohol, not wanting him to get too drunk.

Although this wasn’t the first time the detective had to remind Ben to slow down as a similar conversation was had earlier on in the week at the Vic.

Celebrating his promotion, Callum told Ben to go and get a packet of crisps to try and sober up.

Although resisting his request, Ben replied: “It’s too late to line my stomach but I am going to get a drink.”

As the Mitchell boy has continuously avoided food and opted for an alcoholic drink instead, it didn’t take long before viewers took to social media to suggest there was trouble ahead.

BallumOfficial commented: “Hard to tell if this is the start of anything.”

Simbanrat added: “Ben not eating and drinking too much. Something is going on with him.”

Friendlyperso said: “@bbceastenders this Ben drinking is leading somewhere right? Even Callum noticed.#eastenders”

Natashate1983 tweeted: “I wonder if Ben is abusing alcohol or has an eating disorder because he has been drinking a lot, and Callum keeps mentioning that he has not been eating.”

Wee_Westie29 commented: “I would say alcoholism. but as it’s not really been done in EastEnders since Honey’s eating disorder, I could see that happening again, this time with Ben. #Eastenders.”

Buttonalltheway tweeted: “I think they want us to focus on the drinking and not the not eating part on purpose. It’s strange they have commented on him not eating.”

EastEnders viewers have seen Ben at the heart of a harrowing storyline last year after a horrific rape.

The Mitchell lad didn’t have much time to process what had happened to him before finding out about Lola Pearce’s (Danielle Harold) terminal cancer diagnosis.

Could his drinking and not eating habits be the result of not processing the events that unfolded last year?

Elsewhere in the soap, there’s been heartbreak for Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) after losing her baby girl Peach.

After a one-night stand with Zack Hudson (James Farrar) she fell pregnant but later learnt the unborn had Edwards’ Syndrome, which affects the lifespan.

Making the difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy, Whitney and Zack have been struggling to cope with their grief.

Along with this, Zack has been coming to terms with his HIV diagnosis which he’s kept a secret from Whitney.

However, in upcoming scenes, he’s urged to reveal all to Whitney as he opens up to her at the Vic.
