We’re used to seeing EastEnders’ favourite Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) with her trademark long, straight dark hair – but a huge change in style for the actress has taken her Instagram account by storm.

Lip-syncing to the Blondie classic Heart Of Glass, Shona embraces her inner rock chick with a tousled bob, along with a leather jacket, white shirt and leather waistcoat in a video she’s posted alongside a collection of black and white photos showcasing the new look.

The only comment from Shona is the rock guitar emoji as she lets the images speak for themselves.

The video and pictures have attracted thousands of likes from the actress and singer’s fans, with drag queen Baga Chipz commenting, ‘Stun.’

Many others declared the star as ‘beautiful’, while EastEnders co-star Ellie Dadd, best known for playing Amy Branning, summed it all up with ‘SLAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Given Shona is also an accomplished singer, regularly posting videos of her singing on her Instagram, other followers wondered if this was an early promotion for an album release.

She performed a version of the classic song Hallelujah at the Festival of Remembrance in November in front of the King, which she described as ‘a truly humbling experience.’

Meanwhile it’s been a challenging time for Shona on EastEnders as her character, Whitney, has faced terrible news about her unborn baby.

She was recently told that the baby has a condition called omphalocele, which means its organs have developed outside its body.

The condition can be treated after the baby is born, but there’s a chance it may not survive.

It’s been confirmed that the baby will be diagnosed with a rare but serious condition called Edwards’ Syndrome and EastEnders is working with SOFT UK and Antenatal Results and Choices, to accurately reflect and raise awareness of the condition.

EastEnders’ executive producer Chris Clenshaw commented, ‘It was imperative for us to work alongside Antenatal Results and Choices and SOFT UK to accurately present, and sensitively portray, such an emotional storyline that many parents may relate to.

‘Shona McGarty and James Farrar’s performances have thoughtfully portrayed the realities of the diagnosis and the decision making process with compassion and understanding.

‘We hope that this story resonates with the audience, and that we represent it as sensitively, and as accurately as possible.’
