While The Vic remains closed in light of Mick Carter’s (played by Danny Dyer) tragic assumed drowning, the Albert Square residents who do feel up to a party are forced to use their own homes. However, this will spell trouble as several EastEnders residents end up hospitalised as a party at the Slaters goes terribly wrong. What will the outcome lead to as 2023 kicks off on the Square?
In scenes yet to air on the BBC soap, Walford’s locals flock to the Slaters to see in the new year.
The party is in full swing, but Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) is in her bedroom, fretting about Harvey Monroe (Ross Boatman) getting cold feet.
Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) comes down and sees Harvey showing Freddie Slater (Bobby Brazier) a ring-sized box and makes a big assumption.
A panicked Jean worries that Harvey might be about to propose, while Stacey is more concerned her mum could say yes.
Do they have the wrong end of the stick about Harvey’s plans, though?
Meanwhile, Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) is shaken when Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) and Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) arrive with a bottle of whiskey for her.
Taken aback to see the woman she is in love with, Eve ends up encouraging them to stay and sets about befriending Nish.
As the clock counts down to midnight, Nish is trying to find Suki but Eve suddenly collapses.
Chaos ensues as Lily Slater (Lillia Turner) rushes off to be sick, while Jean faints in Harvey’s arms.
Bobby alerts the others that Lily has also passed out in the hallway and when the paramedics arrive, they tell everyone to evacuate the house immediately.
It turns out there has been a carbon monoxide leak at the house.
Later at hospital, a terrified Stacey sits by Lily’s bedside, waiting for her to recover.
Nish is convinced the Slaters will sue over the boiler after speaking to cagey Eve.
In the meantime, he’s determined to strong-arm Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) into doing a deal on the Arches.
When he confronts him about it later, Ben explains the deal is off, which leaves Nish fuming.
After overhearing Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) raging at Sharon Watts’ (Letitia Dean) door, Suki counsels Nish not to take on the Mitchells.
She suggests he uses his charm, not strong-arm tactics.
Later, Nish reluctantly apologises to Ben and Lola Pierce (Danielle Harold) for being insensitive.
A furious Harvey then calls Nish out for trying to throw his money around to deflect attention from the Slater boiler horror.
He rages that Nish is responsible for the dodgy boiler and publicly humiliates him.
Fuming, Nish later rants about Harvey while Suki takes a call from the health and safety Investigator.
They inform her who is at fault for the boiler – who could it be?
Jean and Harvey are having a cosy chat when the Panesars arrive to speak to them.
During their conversation, Nish advises Suki to put the Slater’s rent up.
Who could have been responsible for the potential tragedy?
And could the inevitable row see Suki and Eve having a heart-to-heart about their relationship?
EastEnders continues on Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
