Emma Willis recently returned to ITV to host the latest series of The Voice UK and she is also back on screens for the third series of her programme Emma Willis: Delivering Babies. While the 46-year-old told Saturday Kitchen viewers she is grateful to be a presenter, she revealed she would “love” to work for the NHS as her parents did.

Emma, who is married to singer Matt Willis, has hosted a host of hit programmes, including Big Brother, Sunday Morning Breakfast, I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! NOW and The Brit Awards.

She stepped away from the glamourous side of television in recent years to experience the process of being trained in a maternity ward for her programme Emma Willis: Delivering Babies.

She worked four shifts a week to find out what makes being a midwife one of the hardest, yet most rewarding jobs possible.

Emma opened up about the latest series and made a candid career admission to Saturday Kitchen host Matt Tebbutt on Saturday morning.

Speaking about her programme Emma explained: “So I go and work on a maternity unit for four months of the year and it’s kind of real life about how the maternity ward is run and what goes on from there.

“I suppose it’s a real in-depth and behind-the-scenes look about what happens at a maternity unit.”

Emma trained to be a maternity care assistant ahead of the programme airing which she described as an incredible experience.

“It’s great for me to do that but it’s quite overwhelming at times to be in [midwives’] presence as they are so incredible,” she gushed.

Emma is now training to be a level three emergency support worker which should help alleviate some of the strenuous amounts of work a midwife has in the NHS.

“It’s trying to take some of their simpler tasks so they can focus on the real stuff,” Emma added.

The Big Brother presenter then revealed she always thought she would grow up to work in the healthcare service.

“I always thought I would work in a hospital setting as I grew up around the NHS as both my parents worked there and I love it,” she revealed.

“In my head, when I was younger, I thought I would work in A&E as it’s exciting and you never know what is going to happen.

“When I had a baby my eyes were absolutely opened to what midwives and people working on a maternity ward do for you at that moment when you feel so vulnerable.”

As Emma and host Matt discussed giving birth, the latter said: “It is one of the most phenomenal things to witness but it is also mindblowing at the same time.

“It really puts into perspective what the human body can do.”

Emma said she has become close to mums-to-be in the Princess Alexandra Hospital, in Essex, over the past few years as that is where her series is filmed.

“It’s an amazing unit with incredible people and I think that is a reason the show is so successful,” she exclaimed.

She said her film crew was very small as they did not want to get in way of anything in the hospital but Emma continues to work at the hospital for several months of the year whether the crew is there or not.

Saturday Kitchen continues next Saturday at 10am and Emma Willis: Delivering Babies airs on Channel 4 on Thursdays at 9pm.
