Emmerdale fans praise ITV soap for brilliant flashback episode as Caleb past explained

Emmerdale viewers praised the hit ITV soap on Monday night as they aired a "brilliant" flashback episode on Boxing Day.

During the latest instalment, the village went back in time to 1991 to explain the past of Cain Dingle's long-lost brother Caleb (Will Ash), who made his debut on Christmas Day, as it was revealed he was born in prison and put into care.

For the scenes, which charted the history between Cain and Caleb, actors Aiden Kane and Riccardo Drayton stepped in as the younger versions of these characters. Maddy Barker portrayed a young Chas Dingle in the episode.

In the flashback, viewers learnt that Cain and Caleb met as teenagers but Cain cruelly told his long-lost brother that their mother Faith was already dead, despite the fact she was alive at the time.

As the episode continued, Cain found out a young Chas was pregnant and he was off with Caleb, who had been excited to meet his sister.

Feeling rejected, Caleb stole a car from Cain's garage where they were caught by the police and Cain decided to go down for the crime on one condition – Caleb didn't contact him again.

However, reflecting on it in the present, Cain blamed Caleb for getting him locked up and leaving him unable to protect Chas, and her son Aaron, from Gordon.

The episode ended with Cain getting a phone call off Chas, who was furious to have learnt they have a secret brother and he had kept it hidden for 30 years.

Cain told her not to trust him as she slammed the phone down to which an angry Cain started slamming the phone over and over again in prison.

Viewers were quick to praise the ITV soap for the "brilliant" flashback episode as one person tweeted: "What a brilliant flashback episode #Emmerdale."

A different account put: "A great #Emmerdale episode, another powerful flashback for this group of characters. Really fascinating too."

While another follower wrote: "#Emmerdale delivered a brilliant #BoxingDay flashback episode, especially with excellent acting from young Cain and Caleb."
