Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) is in a tough place at the moment on Emmerdale, manipulated by her mum Sandra (Joanne Mitchell) who has been pretending she had Liv’s best interests at heart, while viewers know that Sandra has really been after Liv’s money all along.
Isobel Steele says that Liv has been ‘blindsided’ by Sandra’s actions. ‘She’s dragged back in again every time there’s a new appearance for Sandra,’ she observes. ‘It’s been nice to see Liv’s journey with that and Sandra’s journey, and how they both end up being bad for each other when they’re together, and how blinkered they are with each other.’
She enjoys the complexity of Liv’s and Sandra’s relationship. ‘[Sandra’s] a very well written character,’ she says.
‘I think somewhere deep down she genuinely does care. I wanted to make sure when we were filming these scenes and I was working with Jo the beats were played where sometimes when she sees the havoc she’s caused. There is genuine emotion there, she feels guilty for what she’s doing.
‘Liv is her daughter and somewhere deep down there is that emotion, that love for Liv. She’s a complex character because she is so awful, but it comes from a place of not knowing what love is, desperation, a bad upbringing, a bad past with Liv.’
Despite this, viewers will be desperate for Sandra to get her comeuppance. Isobel isn’t about to give too much away, but she told us that we can expect a big plot twist.
‘Its just the happy ending everyone is rooting for on screen,’ she says. ‘I loved playing it. It’s a real shock, so we’ve been playing it and having to be aware this is coming up so the audience are surprised by it and I think it pays off really well. It’s a real win.’
Which is excellent news all round.
