Emmerdale viewers fume ‘you idiot’ as Samson Dingle exposes Lydia Dingle

Emmerdale: Sam, Lydia and Mandy confront Craig

Emmerdale viewers have been left furious with teen Samson Dingle (played by Sam Hall) after he revealed his step mum Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) had been raped.

On Tuesday’s instalment of the ITV soap, fans watched as Cathy Hope (Gabrielle Dowling) questioned why Samson was being so distant with her before he decided to tell her what had happened to Lydia.

However, the conversation was overheard by Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) who then decided to tell Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles).

As Rhonda Goskirk (Zoe Henry) heard the two women gossiping about what happened to Lydia, she went over to confront them, although when Lydia walked past, she scolded them all for speaking about her.

It wasn’t long before viewers took to Twitter to fume at Samson for telling people about Lydia being raped before she was ready to talk about it herself.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk about the harrowing storyline, actress Karen Blick revealed both herself and on-screen husband Sam Dingle were emotional when discovering the plot.

She said: “It’s a shocking thing to hear and I saw the look in James’ [Hooton] face and he was shaking his head and saying, ‘I didn’t expect that.’

“Both of us had tears in our eyes and it was a moving reaction, certainly the strongest reaction I’ve ever had to a potential story emotionally.”

Wanting to ensure Lydia’s story was told sensitively, realistically and appropriately, the soap star got in contact with Rape Crisis.

The actress added: “I did speak to people who worked for Rape Crisis and I did meet with women who had similar experiences as Lydia.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV.
