Emmerdale fought off stiff competition from various soaps and serial dramas to pick up the Broadcast Award for Best Continuing Drama.

The ITV soap, which is no stranger to pushing boundaries and exploring hard-hitting stories, secured the victory due to a critically-acclaimed storyline which saw popular character Marlon Dingle, played by Mark Charnock, suffer a stroke last year.

EastEnders, Hollyoaks, Casualty, Coronation Street and Ackley Bridge were also nominated.

Lisa Riley, who plays Mandy Dingle, shared her joy over Emmerdale being crowned the winner, taking to social media to thank the show’s viewers for their continued support.

‘CONGRATULATIONS TEAM EMMERDALE,’ she exclaimed in a tweet. ‘We won at last nights @Broadcastnow awards.

‘@emmerdale what a proud moment for the ENTIRE team-bring the trophy safely back up North today #emmerdale#awards#broadcast#trophy thanks to YOU the viewers.’

Fans were quick to offer their messages of congratulations, with one writing that Emmerdale remains the ‘best show on TV’.

The long-running serial drama, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, will soon embark on another hard-hitting and emotional storyline, announced this morning, as Paddy Kirk, portrayed by Dominic Brunt, contemplates taking his own life.

Lisa, meanwhile, appeared on Lorraine this morning to discuss the storyline in question, and ended up impressing Shania Twain with a snap of Mandy’s iconic wedding dress.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
