Matthew Wolfenden cries on This Morning over his Emmerdale exit montage

Soap star David Metcalfe was moved to tears after being shown a compilation of his time on the ITV soap.

Appearing on Wednesday’s This Morning, the Emmerdale star spoke to hosts Holly Willoughby and Craig Doyle about his upcoming exit.

As the lookback at his character’s storylines came to an end, it was clear the actor was emotional at reflecting on his time in the show.

Realising how moved he was, Craig said: “Uh -Oh, he’s gone!!

Taking off his glasses to rub his eyes, David replied: “Yeah that’s made me really emotional, my goodness.”

As the conversation started to move on to how he feels about leaving his on-screen family after all this time, the soap star was still choked up.

He added: “Sorry, I’m still really emotional, it’s a massive part of my life.”

Matthew made his Emmerdale debut back in 2006 and has featured in some dramatic storylines.

Across his 17 years, fans have seen his character battling testicular cancer, almost getting killed by the village murderer and plenty of romantic dramas along the way.

However, appearing on the show led him to his current wife Charley Webb, who played Debbie Dingle in the soap.

Speaking to Holly and Craig, he continued: “You know what, I met my wife on the show and we’ve had three kids.

“Not only has it given me 18 years of an amazing job, it’s given me a family.

“So to leave it, it’s been a big big part of my life.”

Although it’s not yet known how his character will make his exit, the 43-year-old confessed it won’t be a gruesome end.

He added: “The door is left open, they’re not killing me off I’ve been promised. I’m allowed to tell you that.

“So, who knows, I might be back but we’ll see.”
