Faith Dingle (played by Sally Dexter) was diagnosed with terminal cancer in Emmerdale earlier this year. The soap matriarch, who is the mother of Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter), has been trying to live out her final days to the full but her time on the serial drama comes to a heartbreaking end next week. Ahead of her final scenes airing, Faith actress Sally opened up about her character taking her own life.

Faith recently revealed to her daughter-in-law Moira Dingle (Natalie Robb) she plans on ending her life herself before her cancer takes it.

In upcoming scenes, Faith’s health takes a turn which means their family trip may not be able to happen.

Instead of travelling to the beach, her loved ones decide to bring the seaside to the Yorkshire Dales.

Delighted with how well the beach day is going, things only get better for Faith when old friend Diane Sugden (Elizabeth Estensen) arrives.

Faith enjoys the rest of the day before viewers see her alone in her bedroom looking at photos from the memorable day.

She then switches off her phone as she prepares to end her life as she had previously discussed with Moira.

Viewers will not see Faith take her own life, instead, they will see her preparing to do so when she’s made sure everyone is out of the house.

Faith actress Sally admitted she would have preferred to have a different exit than the soap bosses gave her.

She said: “My idea was to have her save Cain and Chas from some sort of attack in the Woolie – say from a bullet or a knife aimed at her children from a crazed intruder!”

“I found it really quite poignant to film,” Sally told The Mirror of her final scene.

“I knew it meant Faith’s time in Emmerdale was up and so was mine. I have enjoyed being back.”

Sally admitted she was hugely sad Faith will never be able to return to the Dales.

The actress added: “But the story [producer] Jane [Hudson] and the team wanted was a far more important and difficult one to tell.

“I only hope we have done it justice. This subject has caused a lot of debate – and so it should.”

Sally explained the research team “dug deep” throughout the whole storyline surrounding Faith’s demise.

Faith’s loved ones are left heartbroken when they find her lying lifeless in bed in upcoming scenes, with Cain breaking down by her side.

Cain actor Jeff exclusively told Express.co.uk about the impact Faith’s death has on his character.

He said: “It’s going to really hit him hard because there has been a shift in the way he’s accepted the fact that his mother’s a human being and maybe he blamed her a lot for walking out on him and Chas.

“I think he’s held on to that for years and I think we see a shift now.

“Because of that and losing her, I think it’s going to be a big thing for him.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV.
