Emmerdale’s Lydia Dingle ‘too fearful’ to contact police after rape ordeal

Emmerdale: Dan Spencer receives a call from Kerry Wyatt

Lydia Dingle (played by Karen Blick) feels she cannot contact the police about being raped by Craig Reed (Ben Addis) in upcoming Emmerdale scenes.

The actress recently opened up to Express.co.uk about the harrowing storyline that unfolds on screens this month.

Karen explained: “She is fearful about being believed and she does not want to upset her family.

“She is thinking about others, what will this do to Sam? She just wants it to go away, ‘I am going to pretend this didn’t happen.’

“Weeks and further down the line I can see the frustration about her thinking, ‘If only.’”

After the traumatic ordeal, Lydia is left in shock and Craig drives her home acting like nothing’s happened.

She rushes inside and stands in the shower before she starts silently sobbing as water pours over her.

Lydia decides to hide the clothes she was wearing at the time of the assault and keeps it a secret from her husband Sam Dingle (James Hooton).

Is there anyone Lydia will be able to confide in about the assault in upcoming episodes of the ITV soap?

Karen revealed: “I think Kim [Tate] is an obvious choice as Kim suspects something.

“She goes to work the next day and Kim can see that something is not quite right and tries to question her.

“Lydia just shuts down, ‘I am not going there, I am not discussing this.'”

She continued: “I think Kim would offer the distance she needs from her family.”

While Lydia is close to Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley), Karen said she is too concerned she would tell Sam.

“Lydia is ultimately thinking about others and she doesn’t want Sam distressed or hurt,” the actress shared.

“Knowing the Dingles like she does, what will happen? Will people hound Craig? Will the Dingles seek revenge in some way if they can’t get traditional justice?

“So Kim provides that distance but there is also that friendship the two women have. I think Kim will be a good, sound source of advice and guidance.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and ITVX.
