Emmerdale's Samantha Giles quits Twitter over Elon Musk's latest changes

The changes to Twitter since Elon Musk took over have certainly been controversial and decisive – and Emmerdale star Samantha Giles is reflecting the feelings of one side of the argument as she quits the social media platform.

The most recent update to rules, which means that those not subscribed to Twitter Blue can no longer have mobile phone authentication for security, has been the straw that broke the camel’s back for the Bernice Blackstock actress.

‘Think I’ll be coming off Twitter folks- I’m not paying for blue ticks and it’s saying I have to have another authentication method like a key or something which is rubbish!’ she declared in a tweet to her followers.

‘You can find me on Instagram I’m sammeegee. I’ll be posting more on there. X’

She was also not impressed with a three month offer to join Apple News for free – as customers have to input card details.

‘Why is there such an obsession with people trying to look young??,’ she wrote.

‘There’s nothing wrong with making the best of yourself, wearing makeup etc but having surgical procedures to try to turn back time, isn’t that cheating? Also what message is it giving to other women?

‘In my opinion an ironed out face destroys the beauty of the character and experience you’ve picked up. Let’s celebrate all ages as there’s beauty in 20 yr old skin and 40 and 60 and beyond!’

Samantha has also used the platform to speak out about symptoms of the Menopause, something which is also being covered through her character Bernice on Emmerdale.

Viewers will have seen Bernice struggling with hot flushes, alongside other symptoms. Encouraged by friends and family, she sought help from the doctors and was able to start taking HRT.

In an upcoming story, she and Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw) will take over the B&B – but the big opening is somewhat disrupted when Bernice wakes up next to a harpist’s lifeless body after they sleep together.

Actor Tony is full of praise for Samantha, saying: ‘Obviously I’ve known Sam a long time and we’ve had the odd bit and piece together but it’s been great to be working sort of as a double act.

‘It started with the storm stuff last year when we had the clean-up and it sort of started then. It’s been really good.

‘It’s always nice when you’re working with somebody and it’s like a bit of a comedy dynamic going on. She’s great to work with.’
