The Escape to the Chateau couple reflected on the very start of their journey at the Château de la Motte-Husson, which they have detailed in eight series of the Channel 4 favourite. With the popular DIY show now over, Dick and Angel joined Lorraine Kelly to talk about their lengthy project and recalled a moment at the very start where Dick was forced to abandon his new wife.
The talented couple took the risky leap to buy the chateau back in 2015.
With no heating or sewage system installed, the two were tasked with a lengthy list of projects, which was documented in the popular series.
Dick and Angel share a vision to transform the chateau into a thriving home and business, a goal they accomplished with a few rocky moments along the way.
Escape to the Chateau recently aired its last episodes, and Dick and Angel have been reflecting on the last few years.
Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine, they admitted a deadline at the beginning involving their wedding proved to be tricky.
“Was there any time where you thought, ‘Uh oh, we’ve taken on too much here?'” Lorraine asked the pair.
“Never,” Angel replied as Dick agreed, however, the two shared a stressful story.
“But I think there has been deadlines, admittedly self-inflicted, you know, our wedding,” Angel recalled.
She continued: “And I wanted to get in and get some cleaning done and get the decorations done…”
Dick added: “I got told two days before I was disappearing off to America to work that Angela wanted to be in the chateau…
“So it was manic, one o’clock in the morning we were in, and five o’clock in the morning I headed off to America for two weeks and left her there.”
A surprised Lorraine asked: “You just did that? Maybe that was not a bad thing in some ways.”
“I was told to,” Dick quickly explained. It comes as the concluding series wrapped up last Sunday.
The family were in tears as they marked the end of an era.
Angel decided to throw a Christmas party to celebrate the end of the show, and the emotional episode followed the family during their last televised project.
Thanking their guests, Angel stated: “We are so so grateful to have everybody here, our family, friends, old and new and our wonderful team we just love you so so so much.”
Dick added: “Not everybody could be with us tonight, and they are being missed but they are always with us in our hearts and we know that.
“We are so grateful that you are actually here with us because we are now in the glorious situation to be here with you all because we can.
“You are all very special to us, all of you, thank you.”
The couple surprised their guests with a huge firework display, much to the delight of their children, Arthur and Dorothy.
Escape to the Chateau is available to watch on All4.
