Netflix has dropped the first look at American Horror Story star Evan Peters portraying notorious serial killer and sex offender Jeffrey Dahmer.

The 35-year-old actor will be playing the role of Jeffrey in a new true crime series entitled Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story – and the American actor looks worlds away from his usual self in the released TV still.

Taking a look inside the life of Jeffrey, the programme will explore the awful and heinous crimes of one of America's most dangerous serial killers and sex offenders in a 10-episode limited series.

Convicted of killing 17 boys and young men in 1992, in a killing spree from 1978 until 1991, his gruesome killings also featured themes of cannibalism and necrophilia.

Widely referred to as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster by the press, he is said to have preserved certain body parts and kept most of the skeletons of his victims.

In just 10 episodes and with American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy at the helm, Jeffrey's murderous spree will be portrayed on-screen.

The murderer operated from the 1960s until the early 1990s, and the limited series is said to span across this time – giving viewers a glimpse at everything he did.

Deadline reports that the series will be "largely told from the point of view of Dahmer’s victims," while diving deeply into "the police incompetence and apathy that allowed the Wisconsin native to go on a multiyear killing spree".

The real-life serial killer was murdered for the first time when he was just 18, and only three weeks after graduating from high school.

His killing spree lasted for a number of decades before he was finally caught after asking three boys to come back to his apartment and pose for nude photos.

Jeffrey offered each of the boys $100 and they agreed. But when they arrived at his flat, the mass murderer turned on the boys and even hand-cuffed one of them.

Resting his head on the chest of one of the boys, he told him that he planned on eating his heart, but the boy punched him in the face and fled from the flat.

After alerting two policemen, Jeffrey was arrested and subsequently diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder and a psychotic disorder.

Although he has mental health problems, he was found "legally sane" at his trial and was then sentenced to 15 terms of life imprisonment and subsequently jailed.

But he came to his demise three years later in November 1994 when he was beaten to death by Christopher Scarver, a fellow inmate at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Wisconsin.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is due to drop onto Netflix later this year.
