After joining the CBS series in 2018, Missy Peregrym took a seven-month hiatus from FBI for maternity leave this year, leaving the drama without one of its best agents for much of its fifth season. Thankfully, Maggie Bell made her triumphant return this week, but her exposure to poison gas during her last mission could be starting to take its toll.
Missy has hinted Maggie could step down or even permanently leave the FBI in a future episode as her mental health has been in decline since fans last saw her.
When she was last in the field, the special agent was exposed to sarin gas poison before being saved just in time by her partner OA Zidan (played by Zeeko Zaki).
In reality, the actress is back from maternity leave and ready for whatever the new season of FBI might throw at her.
Unfortunately, the same may not be said for Maggie as the traumatic experience has left her shaken and unsure of her abilities.
When she confesses she’s got some nerves about her first day back, OA admits: “Yeah, I was surprised they cleared you so fast. The gas exposure was pretty bad.”
Although Maggie is still fighting fit, Isobel Castille (Alana de la Garza) may realise she still has some recovery to do and convince her to step down from her duties.
During her latest interview, Missy said: “I think it would be impossible not to be triggered in some capacity, returning to work, where she was hurt.
“As much as you can deal with the trauma through therapy, nothing can prepare you for how you will feel walking back into a new case where there is always a risk of it going sideways.”
Maggie’s performance on their latest mission, which saw the FBI team tracking a gang leader with ties to recent murders in the Bronx, could also be a sign of her imminent departure.
OA discovers Maggie has anxiety pills in her car, which could lead to her suspension if they’re discovered by their superiors.
Although she insists they were prescribed by her psychiatrist, the pills could start to affect her performance even more if she relies on them too heavily.
In fact, the effects are already starting to be felt this week as Maggie’s mistakes left their suspect dead and the agents no closer to getting justice for the victims.

“She was given Xanax by her outside therapist which could put her job in jeopardy,” Missy told Deadline.
“But it seems to be the best option for her at the moment. A bit of a safety blanket in the immediate moment, but definitely not the solution.
“I think PTSD is a long-standing issue that sneaks up unexpectedly, and I guess we’ll see how this plays out for her and OA.”
Her PTSD definitely seems to be the focus of Maggie’s arc this season, so fans will just have to keep tuning in to discover how it plays out.
If her trauma continues to rear its head at inopportune moments, Maggie’s colleagues may start to realise she’s too much of a risk to have out in the field.
While this doesn’t necessarily mean Missy will bow out from the series just yet, FBI could be slowly building towards her permanent exit by the end of the season or perhaps the beginning of the next.
Missy doesn’t appear to have any further projects lined up just yet, but Maggie’s departure could give her the opportunity to find something new after spending the last five years on the popular crime procedural.
FBI season 5 continues Tuesdays on CBS in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
