On Sunday night’s Antiques Roadshow, Fiona Bruce took viewers to Wollaton Hall in Nottingham where the experts valued several exciting items. The guests brought some of their treasure antiques to be valued ranging from a Tudor sleeve worth £100,000 to a rare teapot.

However, it was the valuation of three pieces of Batman memorabilia which left the BBC host gobsmacked.

Collector Steven Lane brought three of his items to the show and asked both Fiona and the guests what they thought the pieces were worth.

Steven showcased a Batman mask, a belt worn in one of the movies, and Jack Nicholson’s suit from when he played the Joker.

Steven began: “So these are all from the 1989 Tim Burton Batman film, and we have a variety of different items here that hopefully are going to test you a little bit to see whether you can guess the most valuable.”

He began by explaining the history of each item, before turning his attention to the value.

“This is indeed the Joker,” Steven explained. “So this is Jack Nicholson’s suit.”

As the audience gasped, the collector continued: “These were actually made by Tommy Nutter who was a famous suit-maker from the 60s.

“The colour purple here is actually this particular shade of purple because it’s the colour of the LA Lakers, which was Jack Nicholson’s favourite basketball team.

“Now this costume was worn by Jack Nicholson. So it has got some screen time to it.”

He went on to explain the belt next to the suit was worn by actor Michael Keaton.

Before sharing the valuations, Steven explained one of the items was worth between £4,000 and £6,000, another was worth £40,000 to £60,000 and the best item could fetch up to £150,000 at auction.

Turning to the audience, Fiona asked for their thoughts on which item was worth what.

She went on to share her own opinion, stating: “My thinking is the Jack Nicholson suit has to be the best.

“I think that I will put the belt as basic even though it was worn [in the movie] because it’s less recognisable than this [the Batman mask], which is so recognisable.”

The audience nodded in agreement, however, Steven was quick to shut them down.

Shaking his head, he explained: “I think a lot of your audience are very perceptive and a lot of people had it right so we have basic is the bat mask.

“It is because it’s not worn, and better is the belt. This for a Batman collector is actually a really big field, but it is very niche.

“But the suit wins through, doesn’t it really I mean it presents so well.

“It’s so colourful and then the attributions Jack Nicholson as well.”

After discovering the truth, Fiona was left open-mouthed when Steve explained the suit could fetch between £100,000 and £150,000 at auction.

Antiques Roadshow airs on Sunday at 8pm on BBC Two.
