Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner has been revealed as the lead actress in the new drama, Joan. The series to be premiered on new channel ITVX will centre around the true story of cunning jewel thief Joan Hannington. Sophie will portray the fascinating life of the woman nicknamed The Godmother on ITV screens next spring.
The Emmy award-winning actress will take on the role of the notorious criminal as part of a six-part drama kicking off ITV’s new free streaming service.
Reflecting on the true crime role, she remarked: “I’m so excited to be bringing Joan Hannington’s fascinating life story to screen in Joan.
“She is one of the most notorious figures in the criminal underworld of London, earning her the nickname The Godmother.”
Sophie added: “A woman who goes between her thriving and daring career as a jewel thief, all whilst trying to get her daughter back from social services.

“We see a mother in despair swept up in the exhilarating world of crime.”
The drama will see Sophie’s character rule a criminal underworld to the backdrop of the wild and affluent London in the 1980s.
Screenwriter Anna Symon was inspired by the memoirs of the criminal mastermind, who released the sensational story of her life in 2002.
Ahead of next year’s release, she was in awe of what Sophie will bring to the table.
She even met up with Joan before creating the televised portrayal.
Anna explained: “From penniless single parent to accomplished diamond thief, Joan Hannington’s life story is a thrilling, rags-to-riches rollercoaster.
“I couldn’t be more excited to watch the stellar talent Sophie Turner step into Joan’s shoes.
“Ever since I first read Joan’s explosive memoir, I have been desperate to bring her story to screen.”
Sophie will step into the shoes of the absorbing character after her amazing stint on the worldwide phenomenon Game Of Thrones.
She made her acting debut at the age of 13 on the HBO hit, but with that came some challenges.
The star told The Cut: “The subject matter was so heavy that I just developed a coping mechanism of just having the most fun in between takes, so I wouldn’t get traumatised.
“I’m sure I’ll exhibit some symptoms of trauma down the road. At that age, I don’t think I could comprehend a lot of the scene matter.”
She remarked: “The first few years, I had my mom with me because she was chaperoning me, so she would be very helpful and give me snacks.”
Sophie starred in Game of Thrones from 2011 to 2019 and was one of the few characters to survive all the way to the final show.
The acting prodigy moved to the big screen as Jean Grey in The X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.
Her most recent starring role was Netflix’s huge true crime drama hit The Staircase.
