GRAND Designs host Kevin McCloud faced a backlash from viewers as he delivered a brutal putdown to a sobbing couple.

During last night's repeat episode of the Channel 4 property programme, viewers were introduced to couple Leigh and Richard.

The pair – who met while jumping out of a plane skydiving – were seeking Kevin's help with their plan to transform a derelict 17th century flour mill.

The property, which is full of rotten timbers and riddled with structural cracks, proved to be a big challenge to convert into a dream contemporary home with three bedrooms.

As designer Kevin, 63,explored the gutted building before its transformation, he pondered: "We have to keep them, the question is how we do that, do we restore them and find new uses for them, as dwellings even?"

"This ain't no domestic project is it," Kevin exclaimed during the episode as the project faced trouble.

However, viewers were left shocked throughout the episode as Kevin slammed the couple over their plans to revamp the ancient building.

"Oh, goodness me," he gasped as he arrived on site. "Bits of building, bits of building out in the rain … that maybe should have stayed inside the building.

As the couple sobbed towards the end of the episode as their dream home was complete, they told Kevin they didn't release how import the property was to the locals.

"We just want to do right by her," said Richard, while Leigh said: "I've never cared about a building more than The Mill."

"I think this is going to be home for a long time and I'd do it again in a heartbeat."

Fans of the series were unhappy with Kevin's comments during the programme, with one Twitter user saying: "I’ve watched his episode of #granddesigns before @Channel4 and remember getting annoyed at how judgmental Kevin McCloud was being. The bits they took out were rotten and unsafe man!!"

Another said: "Say what you’re thinking Kevin!"

Meanwhile, some viewers found the host's remarks humours, as one posted: "'Old houses aren't just smelly and damp, they're greedy and ungrateful' thanks to @granddesigns and @Kevin_McCloud for giving us a laugh out loud moment and a quote to keep us going through the refurbishment."

"Haha @Kevin_McCloud is hating what these guys are doing to the old Mill! Can’t seem to hide his disappointment! #GrandDesigns," a further viewer said.

Grand Designs airs on Channel 4 and is available to stream on All4.
