Greg Davies reveals ‘humiliating’ chip shop encounter with Sophie Ellis Bextor’s mum

Never Mind the Buzzcocks host Greg Davies has opened up about his most embarrassing celebrity encounters – including the time he met his famous crush, Blue Peter star Janet Ellis.

The comedian told OK! that he ran into Janet – who is the mum of singer Sophie Ellis Bextor – in a chip shop, but ended up "humiliating" himself.

"I met Janet Ellis once in a fish and chip shop. I used to have a terrible crush on her, all throughout my childhood," he said.

"Then I finally met her and said something humiliating, I think chips based, that guaranteed I would never end up in the relationship I craved."

Janet Ellis, 67, rose to fame as a face of children's TV in the 70s and 80s, hosting Blue Peter for four years before appearing on The Wright Stuff, Just the Two of Us, The Great Garden Challenge, The Weakest Link and Antiques Road Trip.

He added that he went on to meet her daughter Sophie and told her of his unrequited love for her mum.

"I met her daughter Sophie on a show once and told her I fancied her mum and she rolled her eyes and said ‘everyone does,'" he said.

Greg's cringe-worthy celebrity stories don't end there, with the Taskmaster star revealing that he once made an enemy of The Grand Tour's James May after an accidental spillage.

"I knocked a bottle of James May’s wine over once and he really wasn’t happy with me," Greg added.

The TV presenter is back on Sky Max for the latest series of Never Mind the Buzzcocks, joining fellow stars Daisy May Cooper, Noel Fielding and Jamali Maddix for more musical mischief.

The new series sees the likes of Shaggy, Ellie Goulding, Pete Doherty and Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham stop by to test their pop culture knowledge through a series of hilarious rounds.

Teasing one of his highlights of series three, Gregg revealed that he met his childhood hero, Madness frontman Suggs, on the show.

"In every series we’ve had one of my heroes from my musical past or youth. We had Holly Johnson from Frankie Goes to Hollywood last series and we’ve also had the boys from Happy Mondays who I was a mad fan of," the Never Mind the Buzzcocks host said.

"When I was 11, I was obsessed by Madness and their album, Complete Madness, was the first I ever bought. What I find endlessly crushing is that I meet these heroes and they’re not that much older than me. When I was 11, Suggs was just an 18-year-old kid but to me he was a majestic pop deity."

Never Mind the Buzzcocks returns to Sky Max at 9pm on Wednesday 23rd August.
