Greys Anatomy star Kevin McKidd pranks fans during Six Four filming

Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Episode 13 Preview

Kevin McKidd has been behind handsome Dr Owen Hunt for more than a decade in Grey’s Anatomy and rarely gets to fly back to Scotland. So when the opportunity to star in Six Four which is set in his home country came up, McKidd couldn’t help but jump at the chance. It was also an opportunity for him to show off some of that classic Scottish humour.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Six Four.

Actor Kevin McKidd may be best known for Grey’s Anatomy but he has dabbled in other projects over the years when he is able to get a break from shooting the medical drama.

Some of his work over the past decade or so have been in Brave, Franklin and Bash, Home Sweet Hell, Tulip Fever, Room 104 and Star Wars: Rebels.

His latest project is the crime drama Six Four which saw McKidd return to his roots in Scotland as DC Chris O’Neill.

Overjoyed that he was able to make the trip back home to see his loved ones, McKidd couldn’t help but have a little fun while shooting around Glasgow.

McKidd told the press, including Express.co.uk: “It was a lot of fun to do. It was challenging going to Edinburgh, Waverley station, and the streets of Glasgow.

“There were definitely hecklers hanging out of windows going ‘What you filming? Is that you from Trainspotting?’, all that kind of stuff.

“When they said ‘What you filming?’ we ended up saying ‘It’s a new show called Taggart’s Dad, it’s a spin-off, it’s the back story.’

“That’s what we would tell people just for a laugh.”

For those who may not be as familiar with Taggart, the show was a gritty detective series set in Glasgow during the 1980s.

Taggart, played by actor Mark McManus, was part of the Maryhill CID of Strathclyde Police who were often found investigating dangerous crimes and murders.

Fans would also get an insight into the officers’ personal lives when they weren’t working on the latest case.

While some fans may have believed McKidd’s prank at the time, he was actually busy working on the four-part crime series Six Four.

Inspiration for the ITV series came from the novel of the same name by author Hideo Yokoyama, which was originally set in Japan.

But it was the creators of the TV adaptation who decided to change the setting to Scotland, with filming taking place throughout Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Some of the shooting locations include West End Police Station, Newbattle Abbey College, Duntercleugh Cottage, City Morgue and Glasgow Central Station, just to name a few.

The 49-year-old added how even though he loved the LA life, he was thrilled to get back to where he grew up.

McKidd said: “I’ve been wanting to work back in Scotland for quite some time, so it truly felt like a really lovely homecoming.
“And I love working over there (in America) and the crews and actors are brilliant.
“But there’s something that just feels really familiar, there’s a shorthand that exists, I think, in British crews and British actors, between us all, that you just kind of know.”
Six Four is available to watch on ITVX.
