The new series of SEAL Team marks a change with a significantly shorter series, but fans can expect the show to continue with its high-octane storylines and character development. Episode two titled Crawl, Walk, Run was no different after viewers saw Clay Spenser (played by Max Thieriot) in the aftermath of the catastrophic ambush, which brought season five to a close and had a devastating impact on his life. Here’s a rundown on what happened to Clay and why star Max Thieriot appears to be taking more of a backseat in SEAL Team.

What happened to Clay Spenser’s leg in SEAL Team?

The latest episode saw Clay three months after the ambush and still recovering in hospital.

His best friend and self-appointed ‘battle boo’ Sonny Quinn (AJ Buckley) refused to leave Clay’s side and would reminisce with him about their days in the field.

In a tragic twist, Clay lost his leg which was amputated following an infection while he’d been in hospital.

He was now undergoing physiotherapy to help him to walk again as well as using a prosthetic to replace his leg.

Clay was determined to overcome adversity as he tried to stand for a minute but fell to the floor with his physio therapist urging him to keep going.

He came out of hospital in a wheelchair to meet the other members of the Bravo team in a bar for a catch up and drink.

Since his battle injury, Clay was revealed to be joining Green Team where he would be training up new recruits to face battle.

Nonetheless, Jason Hayes (David Boreanaz) felt guilt over what had happened to Clay and it was a while before they spoke.

Clay had nothing but gratitude for Jason for saving his life and telling him some things would always be out of his control.

The character will now be taking more of a backseat on SEAL Team after being an integral part of the show for so long.

But Clay would still be going on a journey through season six with actor Thieriot saying he would face a “huge emotional and physical struggle”.

He went on to say Clay would go on “a journey of incredible highs and incredible lows” and it would be “a lot”.

In fact, Thieriot went as far as to say Clay would have the biggest arc any of the characters have faced on the show, such is the situation he finds himself this year.

The star went on to tease his alter-egos fate, telling TVLine: “Clay’s death, I think for everybody, has always been on the table.”

Adding: “The same can be said for probably almost every character on the show.”

The reason for the shake-up in Clay’s role on SEAL Teams comes after Theiriot landed a part in the CBS series Fire Country.

With Thieriot’s reduced role in SEAL Team, he is now able to lead on the forthcoming drama series following a group of convicts working as firefighters in the hopes of getting a reduced sentence.

Fire Country has been produced by Hollywood legend Jerry Bruckheimer and promises action and drama.

Thieriot was able to balance his commitments to both SEAL Team and Fire Country with the actor now appearing in the shows, which will be on at the same time.

The actor shared a photo from Fire Country on Instagram with his 567,000 followers, saying: “Still feels like this is all just a dream. October 7th it’s going down!!!! @firecountrycbs Friday nights! Can’t wait! #firecountry.”
