The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power takes its cue from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Appendices, which means the show’s creators had to infer much from the information available to them. The Lord of the Rings Appendices charts the time prior to the novel trilogy and the events of The Hobbit. Rings of Power takes place in the Second Age of Middle Earth with the programme-makers given scope to create new characters as well as using existing ones from the source material.

Theo is a non-canonical character who is just in the TV series and falls into a storyline involving his mother Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi) and the elf Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova).

They are villagers living in Hordern, before it was decimated by the orcs leading them to flee to the elf watch tower Ostirith.

This story thread also involves Adar (Joseph Mawle), who is leading a group of orcs as they tunnel underground and build up their forces.

However, it’s their end goal remains unclear after Adar appeared to be appalled by the mere suggestion he was Sauron.

Throughout the show, Theo’s allegiances have been questionable since he discovered the hilt of a sword bearing Sauron’s sigil.

For a while, it looked like he could be giving in to the power of the dark lord as the hilt seemed to unleash magic.

However, in the most recent episode of Rings of Power, he revealed the weapon to Arondir who realised the powers of darkness would fall across this land after discovering a stone carving in the walls of Ostirith.

Theo, Bronwyn and Arondir will either have to fight or surrender to the orcs as their forces grow stronger.

Who plays Theo in Rings of Power?

Theo is portrayed by 16-year-old Australian actor Tyroe Muhafidin with Rings of Power marking his biggest role to date.

Prior to starring in Rings of Power, he appeared in the short films Two Sands and Dusk.

His other credits include the TV show Caravan and the music video Make Them Suffer: Ether.

Speaking at the premiere of the show, Muhafidin said about Theo’s epic action sequence in the first episode: “It was a big fight in the kitchen. It was a lot of months of hard work in the stunt gym learning how to fall and how to stealth.

“It was fun to let out physical energy because I’m a teenager, I need to get moving. So I always loved going into the stunt gym and get moving.”

Reflecting on his first experience of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies, the actor admitted he was actually younger than the film franchises themselves.

He said: “So, I didn’t grow up on it like a lot of people have. But my dad was a big fan of the trilogy, so he always had it on around the house.

“So I can memorise little bits. I remember seeing that as a little seven-year-old. But I didn’t really know much about it other than Gollum and the guy that loses his finger.”

However, he quickly researched The Lord of the Rings by watching the extended versions of Peter Jackson’s films “back-to-back” which he said was “intense”.

Muhafidin also read The Hobbit and said he was now a big fan of Tolkien’s work.

The star said viewers could come to the show blind, describing it as “adventurous” and saying it was “so easy to get lost in” the rich and vibrant world of Middle Earth.

Adding to Hey U Guys: “It’s such an easy escape from the world that we live in and it doesn’t matter how old you are, you’re going to fall in love with this world because Tolkien was a genius.”
