Huge British noughties band returns for biggest ever gig to celebrate iconic debut album’s 20th anniversary | The Sun

THEY wowed critics and indie fans alike when they released their fresh, razor sharp guitar anthems two decades ago.

Now Bloc Party are back to celebrate their debut album Silent Alarm by playing the record in full at their biggest headline show to date.

The band, fronted by Kele Okereke, will headline Crystal Palace Park on Sunday, July 7, topping a bumper bill that includes Swedish rockers The Hives in a UK exclusive and the hip-swaying rhythms of Friendly Fires.

Not only will the headline set include Silent Alarm in full, but the band is promising a selection of greatest hits too.

Kele said: "We've been having so much fun playing shows over the past year, so it makes sense to do something special for old and new fans, celebrating twenty years of Bloc Party.

"We heard from a lot of people that they couldn't get tickets for the Silent Alarm gigs, so a one-off summer party playing that and the bangers feels like the right thing to do.”

There'll be something for everyone as the band dips into its impressive back catalogue from sophomore effort A Weekend in the City, 2008's Intimacy, the aptly titled fourth record Four, the experimental Hymns and most recent record Alpha Games.

But it's those debut classics that will no doubt be sang the loudest as Kele and co blitz through the likes of Helicopter, Like Eating Glass and Banquet, to name but a few.

The album, which peaked at number three in the UK charts in 2005, was a phenomenon.

It picked up NME's album of the year and is widely considered one of the greatest albums of the noughties.

The band last paid tribute to the album in 2018 and Kele said after those gigs: "I feel like I have been quite candid over the years on my perspective on looking forwards, not looking backwards. For the people around us, our crew and our manager who have seen us perform over the years, everyone agreed the way we performed the music was the best that ever have. That was reassuring for me, on a personal level – that 13 years after releasing that music, we were still able to bring it to life.”

And it looks like there's plenty more left in the tank.

Tickets for Crystal Palace Park go on general sale at 10:00AM (GMT) on Friday from www.ticketmaster.co.uk.
