Inside Grand Designs' award-winning 'straw house' – and how you can stay there | The Sun

GRAND Designs' award-winning 'straw house' is now available to stay in – and here's how.

The Quiet Earth Eco House in Ceredigion was build back in the mid-2000s by Rachel Shiamh who was awarded the Grand Designs Most Sustainable Host award in 2008.

The property is situated in St Dogmaels on a hilltop overlooking breathtaking views of Cardigan estuary, close to local beaches and the Pembrokeshire coastal footpath.

The house is built with natural materials, harvesting rainwater and utilising biofuel. All contributing to a sustainable space and guest experience.

It has no timber frame and the structure is made from straw bales alone pegged with hazel sticks.

The newly listed AirBnb property was the first two storey load bearing straw bale house in the UK.

You can now stay at the property from £99 per night on AirBnb.

Earlier this year, Airbnb launched it's Sustainable Hosting Plan, including a £1 million fund to support hosts with energy efficiency improvements, giving those like Rachel backing to be more sustainable.

It's listed as having two-bedrooms, eight beds, 1.5 bathrooms and it accommodates up to eight guests.

Upstairs offers a beautiful and spacious open plan room which offers itself as a luxury bedroom and studio for a couple or a space for family or occasionally a retreat space for a group of up to 8 with low futon style beds.

There is also a large beautiful attic bedroom as an extra room with a double mattress and space for more.

It's off-grid so that means no hairdryers, meaning you'll have to be up for a low-maintenance weekend to stay here – it's certainly for those who love to switch off.

It's powered by wind and sun and the whole house is heated by a wood stove in the open-plan kitchen.

Outside is a real treat for nature lovers with a wood-fired hot tub to relax in.

The iconic home ended up winning the 2009 Grand Designs eco-house award.
