Inside Shona McGartys love life – failed engagement and co-star romances

EastEnders' Shona McGarty shot to fame as Bianca Jackson's adoptive daughter Whitney Dean way back when in 2008.

Over the 14 years that she has been in the soap opera as Whitney, she has been a part of some huge storylines.

But away from Albert Square, Shona's life could resemble that of a soap opera.

Shona has dated co-stars from the BBC One soap opera, as well as being in a long term relationship which even led to an engagement – albeit short-lived.

To celebrate Shona's birthday, which happens to be today (October 14), scroll on to discover her love life.

Matt Lapinskas

Back in the early 2010s Shona and Matt Lapinskas were the ultimate soap power couple.

Matt portrayed the role of Anthony Moon in EastEnders until 2012, with his relationship with Shona lasting until 2013.

The young couple met for the first time in August 2011 and began spending all of their time together.

Their relationship lasted for 18 months and Matt even thought about marrying Shona but things turned sour after he left the soap and went on Dancing On Ice.

When the pair split Matt spoke to The Sun on Sunday where he revealed: "Shona had no interest in being there for me. All she was interested in was going out partying until 2am.

"She would turn up on my doorstep. Or I'd get a call from one of her friends and have to drop everything. This was a regular thing – she would go out during the week and most weekends."

Ryan Harris

Shona was in a long term relationship for six years, where the Whitney actress even got engaged to be married.

Ryan Harris, an electrician, was with the BBC favourite for six years, with the pair getting engaged in 2018.

18 months later though, the couple called time on their romance.

Speaking about it at the time, Shona said: "We just grew apart. Nothing bad happened, it was all very amicable. We were together for a long time, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

"I’m not ready to date anyone else at the moment and I think it’s really important to have some time by yourself.

"As I’ve got older it’s refreshing because I no longer care what people think of me any more. I’m definitely older and wiser."

Max Bowden

Shona and Max have been hitting the headlines this year after appearing to cosy up to one another in various snaps.

Max joined EastEnders in 2019 and became the sixth actor to play Phil Mitchell’s son and has worked alongside Shona in scenes where both of their characters feature.

Shona and Max's relationship is alleged to have blossomed after he split from his ex-girlfriend Roisin Buckle, who recently gave birth to their first child, Reginald.

The Ben Mitchell actor started dating Roisin in May 2021, with the couple going public in October.

In April this year (2022) the pair announced that they were expecting a baby boy – which came weeks after they split.

Max was then spotted leaving Shona’s lavish Welwyn Garden City home in May after allegedly spending the night there -and that's when rumours began to swirl.

They were then spotted at a kebab van in the summer, with an onlooker revealing that: "They looked very much like a couple."

And weeks later they attended House & Classics Festival in Hertfordshire together while sharing a slew of snaps together online.
