Former Coronation Street star Paula Lane is making a shock return to soaps.

Seven years after leaving her role as Kylie Platt on Corrie, the actress has landed a role on rival TV show Emmerdale. The 37-year-old has been cast as newcomer Ella Forster.

She said: "I’m so excited to be joining the cast of Emmerdale. Everyone has been so welcoming and I can’t wait to start a new chapter playing the role of Ella.

"I’ve already heard there are big plans for her and I can’t wait to see her navigate a new life in the village and hopefully make some friends!" Paula is due to start filming later this month.

The star will be filming scenes alongside Lisa Riley, who plays Mandy Dingle. And bosses are convinced she will be a big hit with viewers.

Producer Kate Brooks said: "Ella is a complex and multi-layered character who comes to the village and certainly makes an impact. We are absolutely thrilled to welcome an actor of Paula’s calibre to the show and we can’t wait to have her light up our screens."

Paula's much-loved character was killed off in Corrie in 2016. But before her death, Kylie lived a rough life that she desperately tried to turn around.

Kylie's story was a tragic one as she was raised by a drug addict mother and father who was abusive. She also resented her half-sister Becky Granger for leaving home when Kylie was eight forcing her to face the hardships on her own. Kylie was later thrown out after getting pregnant when she was nineteen.

After Kylie gave birth to Max, his father Callum Logan ended up in prison and Max was taken into care. Meanwhile, Kylie remained homeless.

A few years later in 2010, Becky tracked Kylie down and helped her regain custody of Max. But when they feared she couldn't handle it as a mother, Kylie sold Max to Becky and Steve McDonald and left.

She then made a surprise return to Weatherfield the following year after meeting David Platt in Tenerife, where she was working as a cage dancer. The pair fell in love and married and the Platts won custody of Max and in 2013 Kylie gave birth to David's daughter Lily.

In 2016, Kylie was unfortunately stabbed to death when she tried to escape the guilt of her ex's Callum's death. Her son Max still remains in the care of David.
