Zack Hudson (James Farrar) and Whitney Dean’s (Shona McGarty) relationship is going well in EastEnders, as the couple are preparing to move out in order to get their fostering journey started.

It has been a hard year for Zack and Whitney, having tragically lost daughter Peach, and having to have a difficult discussion about whether their relationship could go the distance.

Thankfully for fans of the couple, they overcame their difficulties and now seem to be on solid ground once more.

However, that could all be set to change as Whitney Dean actress Shona McGarty is set to leave the show.

Metro.co.uk caught up with James Farrar, who plays Zack, at the Inside Soap Awards, who revealed that he was ‘heartbroken’ to see her go.

‘[It’s] pretty heartbreaking. I’ve always just jumped into a show, done a drama here, drama there, modeled, so I’d do clients for three days, maybe a month tops.

‘When you’re in something long term like this, ongoing drama, and somebody leaves… You’ve got to kind of heal your heart afterwards.’

James was full of praise for his co-star, having worked closely with her for the past year.

‘With Shona, she does something that… I’m hers. It’s just such transparency as a performer – and as a person, by the way. She’s the kindest, calmest, most lovely human being going.’

Zack and Whitney’s relationship came as a bit of a shock to James, who asked us for our opinions on their relationship.

‘I didn’t see it [coming], because the Nancy thing had just finished and I just feel like, it’s Walford of course, but what relationship goes from you’ve just split up with somebody… and then they fell deeply in love through something quite tragic.’

In terms of what the future holds for the couple, James is as in the dark as the rest of us, but he suspects that one particular character may be set to lean on Zack for support in the near future.

‘You know what, with Christmas, the body, the fostering storyline, Shona leaving, I wish I could [tease what’s to come]! I have no idea! I’m mates with the exec and I have no idea!

‘I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens around Christmas because inevitably what’s going to happen is Zack’s got to wrap himself around Sharon to ensure that, whatever happened that day/night, she’s comforted.’

Whatever the future holds, we’re sure it’s going to be dramatic, in true EastEnders style.
