Jennie Bond recalls being scolded by King Charles for wearing wrong shoes

‘Wrong shoes’ King Charles scolding of Jennie Bond

Today is a momentous day as it marks exactly one year since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, who died aged 96 at the Royal residence of Balmoral Castle.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond joined host Lorraine Kelly on Lorraine to speak fondly of King Charles after his first year on the throne.

Jennie outlined King Charles’s “great sense of humour” as she recalled some of their meetings over the years.

She told Lorraine: “He always used to laugh at me, wherever we were around the world. I tended to wear white stilettos – a ridiculous idea.”

And King Charles, or Prince Charles as he would have been at the time, would joke around with her.

Jennie continued: “And so he’d point at them and say ‘Wrong shoes again, Miss Bond.’”

She spoke warmly of the monarch, affirming that “he’s a man who wears his heart on his sleeve,” who also “feels things very deeply and cares about people.”

To mark the first anniversary of her passing, King Charles has recorded a special message and released one of his favourite photographs of his mother.

The King said: “In marking the first anniversary of Her late Majesty’s death and my accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us.”

King Charles also shared his deep gratitude “for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all”.

The image that he chose to share is a photograph of his mother, which was taken by Cecil Beaton in October 1968, that had not been released until now.

In it the Queen is seen wearing her ceremonial robe and the Grand Duchess Vladimir’s Tiara, made up of 15 interlaced diamond circles.

King Charles and Queen Camilla spoke to the crowds that had gathered outside today’s service at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral on September 8.

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, returned to the UK to visit his late grandmother’s final resting place, St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

In London, gun salutes were fired at midday at the Tower of London and in Hyde Park to mark the anniversary of King Charles’s accession to the throne and the bells of Westminster Abbey also rang out at 1pm.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
