Presenter Jeremy Vine, 57, made controversial remarks about junior doctors on an episode of his Channel 5 daytime show which has led to more than 2,000 complaints to Ofcom. It came as the journalist remarked that those that fell under the medical title of “junior doctor” were only “finding their feet” within the profession.
As he led a debate about junior doctors getting a 35 percent pay rise, he seemed to suggest that the professionals weren’t as experienced.
Lin Mei and Kevin Maguire were in the discussion, which came during strike action by NHS workers.
Lin argued: “We need doctors and I don’t think the job of being a doctor is as attractive anymore so I do agree they need a pay rise but 35 percent is a stretch.
“Essentially like [Jeremy] said, being a doctor is like being in other fields as a graduate or apprentice.
“Now the average for a graduate is £25,000, so they’re still getting more than the average graduate.”
Kevin disagreed, arguing: “Junior doctors make it sound like they’re hardly doing anything. Most of the doctors we will encounter are junior doctors.”
Jeremy went on to remark: “These are the first few years, where I won’t call them trainees, but they’re very much finding their feet.
“They’re very much junior doctors here or foundation job doctors we call them.”
He went on to call a junior doctor at the end of their training as “starting their first day as a qualified doctor”.
The presenter’s comments saw 2,250 complaints reported to Ofcom.
As well as the official complaints, many viewers took to social media outlets such as TikTok and Twitter, which saw an explosion of backlash against his statement.
Twitter user @Alisson13ecker1 fumed: “Jeremy Vine is a w****er in more ways than one.
