It was all going so well for Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) in Coronation Street. He managed to win the heart of the woman he was ‘insane about from the moment they first kissed,’ Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) and move in with her at the Rovers. His triple murders had gone undetected. Life was sweet.
Then a body was found at the building site and it was quickly identified as being that of Leo (Joe Frost) – Stephen’s first victim and Jenny’s former boyfriend, the man she was planning a new life in Canada with.
Stephen has had quite a bit of experience at holding his nerve when the situation gets hairy, but this was next-level hairy as Jenny started to question events. She pointed out that Leo must be in Canada, as Stephen had spoken to his father Teddy (Grant Burgin) who was in Canada with him.

With Jenny inadvertently linking Stephen’s name with two of the people he has murdered – Leo and Teddy – he was really starting to get uncomfortable. Then Tim (Joe Duttine) told Craig (Colson Smith) about the time Leo punched Stephen after finding out he’d kissed Jenny.
Stephen managed to talk his way out of that one for now, as he told Craig that there had been no hard feelings between him and Leo, but Leo had later had a fight with Teddy.
Terrified that his second victim might also be found, Stephen couldn’t help himself from going to the canal, where he disposed of Teddy’s body in the roof box from Audrey (Sue Nicholls)’s car. He was followed by Tim, who’s long been suspicious of Stephen. He was puzzled to see Stephen prodding about in the water with a stick. Not weird behaviour at all.
In upcoming episodes it seems like everything is gaining a momentum that Stephen can’t control. Jenny realises that it’s odd that Teddy hasn’t been in touch with her about Leo’s death and suggests paying him a visit. Stephen desperately tries to change her mind.
A concerned Jenny goes to the police station and tells Craig that she’s worried about Teddy.
Stephen’s next idea is to get as far away from Weatherfield as possible and he tells Jenny he wants to take her away on a lovely holiday to Thailand. It’s a nice idea, but Jenny can’t possibly leave because on the same day she gets the news that Waterford’s are closing the Rovers for refurbishments and she needs to put all of her time and energy into saving her pub. Stephen is thwarted.
Then DS Swain arrives with more news. The police now have proof that Leo didn’t get to Canada, and neither did Teddy. Jenny is adamant that can’t be the case, as Stephen spoke to Teddy while he was there. Stephen once again panics as his name keeps being brought up in connection with the case.
He renews his plan for a ‘holiday’ in Thailand, and as they’re now homeless due to having to leave the Rovers, Jenny agrees. They temporarily move in with Rita (Barbara Knox) but Jenny assures her they’ll soon be jetting off.
Not soon enough for Stephen, who knows that it’s only a matter of time before the police discover that Teddy is also dead and start linking both deaths back to him.
It looks like the game is almost up for Stephen – and the next few weeks are going to be gripping.
