Matt Hancock ‘doesn’t expect to serve in Government again’ after I’m A Celebrity

Matt Hancock has revealed that he "doesn’t expect to serve in Government again" after his I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! appearance.

The former health secretary, 44, is set to enter the jungle in today's episode, Wednesday 9 November, along with comedian Seann Walsh.

Despite having his conservative whip removed after his I'm A Celeb announcement, Matt has said that he's had a lot of support and looks forward to engaging with a younger audience.

He also insisted that although he's in the jungle, he is able to be contacted for “urgent constituency matters”.

Before his I'm A Celeb arrival, Matt said: "I don’t expect to serve in Government again but there are lots of ways you can communicate and engage with people.

He said: “When I got approached to take part, I did think long and hard about it but one of the reasons that I felt able to say yes was because the IAC team have put in place a system so I can be reached at any point on any urgent constituency matters.

“Lots of people have a view on me from being health secretary in the pandemic dealing with some very difficult issues, but that’s not the whole story."

He added: "I am looking forward to throwing myself into it all like I do everything in life. You can’t hide anything in the jungle, you see somebody warts and all.”

Matt went on to explain that he wants to show that politicians are human beings also and that communicating with the public doesn't always have to be done through traditional political shows.

He said: “There are lots of different ways to communicate with the public and we (politicians) are wrong if we think you can only do that on the traditional political shows where you are mainly only talking to people who take an active interest in politics.

“It’s important we engage with everyone, including young people, in who our politicians are and this programme is a good way to do that. I am looking forward to it.”

After Matt's I'm A Celeb announcement, Chief Whip Simon Hart MP stated: “Following a conversation with Matt Hancock, I have considered the situation and believe this is a matter serious enough to warrant suspension of the whip with immediate effect.”

Viewers should expect to see Matt and Seann taking part in the jungle's next Bushtucker Trial.

I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! airs today, Wednesday 9 November, at 9pm on ITV and the ITV Hub
