Maureen Lipman has revealed that she struggled to stop crying while filming Cerberus’ final scenes in Coronation Street, which brought back memories of her own dog’s death.
The actress, who plays Evelyn Plummer, was at the centre of an emotional storyline in the ITV soap last week, as her character bid farewell to her beloved pet Cerberus.
After worrying that he wasn’t acting like himself, Evelyn and Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) took Cerberus to see the vet, who ran some tests and informed them that his kidneys were failing.
Evelyn was absolutely devastated by the news, but ultimately decided that she didn’t want to see Cerberus suffer, and thus sat beside him as he was put to sleep.
Maureen, who previously played interim Rovers landlady Lilian Spencer, revealed that filming the scenes in question were ‘incredibly sad’.
‘The animal looked so hangdog on its last day, I swear he knew the storyline,’ she told The Mirror. ‘It was incredibly sad. One of the girls in make-up asked if I needed a tear stick.
‘I told her I needed something to stop me crying, not start me.’
Maureen explained that the goodbye scenes brought back memories of having to say goodbye to her own dog, Diva, who died last year.
‘Last year, my 16-year-old dog Diva had to be put down,’ she said. ‘She’d been coughing for weeks so I knew it was the end.

‘The awful thing was, I was filming in Salford so I had to say goodbye to her on Zoom. It was horrible. The story with Cerberus brought all that back.’
Cerebus’ goodbye scenes, received acclaim from fans on the night of transmission, with social media users praising Maureen’s powerhouse performance.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
