Historian Rafe Heydel-Mankoo took a swipe at the Duchess of Sussex as he was interviewed about her children Archie and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor on Thursday evening’s instalment of GB News. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are believed to be fighting for their children to have royal titles in the wake of the Queen’s death. Rafe branded the alleged request “outrageous” after the couple stepped down as senior royals in 2020.
Archie, three, and Lilibet, one, are considered prince and princess now King Charles III has ascended the British throne.
However, the children cannot have His Royal Highness or Her Royal Highness titles, it has been reported.
A source told The Sun the Sussexes have been “left furious” Archie and Lilibet “cannot take the title HRH”.
London-based writer Rafe was interviewed by Patrick Christyon Thursday about the change in titles on GB News.
Rafe began: “Now they want their kids to have royal titles – they want to have their cake and eat it too, don’t they?
“I mean it’s quite outrageous as this was a couple who said they were basically going to distance themselves from the Royal Family.
“They said they wanted to have their own lives in North America and yet here they still want to benefit from the privileges that come with being a member of the Royal Family.”
He continued: “The fact is, you may remember, Meghan had said originally the Royal Family were being racist for not giving her children the title of prince and princess.
“The fact is only the children and grandchildren of the sovereign get the title of prince and princess.
“Now that the Queen is dead, her children automatically get it because Charles is King.
“So because these are his grandchildren, they automatically become [prince and princess].
“That is why they become prince and princess but Meghan just doesn’t understand royal titles.”
Meghan, 41, first spoke out against the title rules during her explosive television interview with Oprah Winfrey last year.
The Sussexes explained how Archie not having a prince title caused complications for them with the Royal Family.
Meghan said: “They were saying they didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, which would be different from protocol, and that he wasn’t going to receive security.
“This went on for the last few months of our pregnancy where I was going, hold on for a second.”
It is understood King Charles is expected to officially anoint his two grandchildren shortly, The Sun reported.
Meanwhile, Prince William’s new title as the Prince of Wales was quickly added to the Royal Family’s website.
His wife Kate Middleton was listed as the Princess of Wales and their three children, George, nine, Charlotte, seven and Louis, four, are now listed “of Wales”.
The Queen’s funeral is taking place on Monday morning in Westminster Abbey.
