Emmerdale have been crowned best serial drama at the National Television Awards leaving Neighbours fans disappointment.

The star-studded showbiz ceremony returned on Thursday evening (October 13) after being delayed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Host Joel Dommett was in charge of proceedings and welcomed stars from across the globe to present gongs to the worthy winners.

EastEnders and Coronation Street were also in the running to win the gong for Best Serial Drama but there could only be one winner.

Boy George announced that Emmerdale had won the award with the cast bombarding the stage to collect their gong.

Taking to Twitter to discuss the result, one fan penned: "Heartbroken we couldn’t win it for Neighbours! So deserved."

Another added: "Stayed up in hope that @neighbours would win!!! They should’ve won."

A third person posted: "Neighbours was robbed."

While a fourth said: "Neighbours should have been recognised. Disgraceful."

It's been an emotional year for soap fans as Australian continuing drama Neighbours came to an end after 37 years.

The show began way back in March 1985, and will miss its 40th birthday by just three years.

Neighbours' final episode aired on July 30 and featured Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Guy Pearce and Margot Robbie returned to say goodbye to Ramsay Street.

In March, Channel 5 announced it was dropping the show – leaving a funding gap because the British network was a key broadcast partner in the series.

Stefan Dennis, who has played Paul Robinson since the show started in 1985, told the BBC that it was going to take a while to "say goodbye to Paul".

"He's not just someone I come to work and play for a few hours, and then go home," he said.

"You're talking about a character I have grown up with, matured with, developed with for nearly 40 years.

"I don't know how I am going to say goodbye. I'd like to think I'm going to hang the suit up and walk away, but I think it'll take a bit of a while to shake off."

Singer Kylie, who played Charlene Robinson from 1986 to 1988, set social media alight when she posted pictures of her and on-screen husband Jason Donovan, back on the street.

The 1987 episode of the couple's wedding is still perhaps the soap's most iconic moment.
