Since Daniel Craig stepped down from the James Bond role after No Time To Die, the hunt has been on for the new-and-improved 007. At the moment, odds from Ladbrokes have cemented Superman star Henry Cavill as the firm favourite to take over as the suave spy. But he has been considered for a number of major roles in the past, including Twilight’s Edward Cullen.

The teenage vampire was ultimately played by The Batman star Robert Pattinson throughout the entire film franchise, from 2008 to 2012 across five films.

However, Stephenie Meyer, the author of the source material books, once revealed she wanted Cavill to play the good-looking ghoul.

In 2007, Meyer wrote on her blog to tell her dedicated fans that Twilight was finally being optioned for a movie. However, she added: “The most disappointing thing for me is losing my perfect Edward. Henry Cavill is now 24 years old. Let us have a moment of quiet in which to mourn…” She later added in another interview that “the only actor I’ve ever seen who I think could come close to pulling off Edward Cullen is… Henry Cavill.”

Now Cavill, who is promoting his new Netflix movie Enola Holmes 2, reacted to the news that he “missed out” on the role.

Cavill appeared on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast where he asked if there was any rivalry with Pattinson, who eventually claimed the role.

“Not at all,” he said. “Because I didn’t know about the movie. I didn’t know about them wanting to cast me and the internet wasn’t quite the tool that it is now and so I only found out afterwards.”

When he did find out about the casting hopes of Meyer, he recalled thinking: “Oh okay, that would have been cool.”

Previously, the 39-year-old actor has opened up about how he handles missing out on big parts.

Cavill said on The Graham Norton Show: “Essentially, I got close to a bunch of stuff and didn’t get it, but it’s funny that people think that’s a bad thing. In Hollywood — or in the acting industry — everyone’s trying to get a role and they’re not necessarily getting them. And so, to get an opportunity to be in the limelight by missing out on the big roles is actually a good thing as opposed to a bad thing. And I count my lucky stars for each one of those.”

Specifically, he missed out on the role of a lifetime in 2005 when he went up against Craig for James Bond in Casino Royale.

Ultimately, Craig was told he was “too chubby” for the role of 007. But the tables have turned now.

The Superman actor currently has an incredible 5/2 odds on becoming the next James Bond from Ladbrokes.

Last year he spoke candidly about being considered for Bond while on The Graham Norton Show. He said: “If [Bond bosses] Barbara [Broccoli] and Mike [G Wilson] were interested in that, I would absolutely jump at the opportunity. At this stage, it’s all up in the air. We’ll see what happens. But yes, I would love to play Bond, it would be very, very exciting.”

He went on to add: “I would definitely have a conversation. From what I understand, there are very early conversations happening at the top, but there is no list as such.”

Although Cavill is currently the favourite in the Bond odds, he is not alone in the running.

Cavill also has the might of Tom Hardy to compete against.

The Venom actor is hot on his heels with an impressive 6/1 on becoming Bond.

They both have to contend with another Netflix star, however: Regé-Jean Page, who has a powerful 3/1.
