Nigel Harman breaks silence on Strictly exit as Katya Jones breaks down in tears

Strictly: Nigel Harman teases ‘tearjerking’ dance routine

Nigel Harman appeared on Strictly Come Dancing’s live show on Saturday night to explain why he has pulled out of the competition, leaving his professional partner Katya Jones in floods of tears.

Nigel had to pull out of the competition earlier today ahead of the Musicals’ Week episode airing with Ellie Leach, Annabel Croft, Bobby Brazier and Layton Williams. Speaking alongside Katya to host Claudia Winkleman upstairs away from the dancefloor, the soap star said he’d “done something to me rib” while rehearsing.

The 50-year-old said: “I was leaping off [something] and was about to be caught by some handsome men. As I flew, I was Peter Pan and as I landed I was in A&E. So I have done something to my rib basically and it is quite painful.”

He added: “I am a little bit high on painkillers too, but I am having a lovely time.”

Claudia told Nigel he’d been amazing and asked if he’d enjoyed the Strictly experience. He shared: “I have loved it, this has not really sunk in, when I saw everyone come down the stairs I thought, ‘This is real and I am not part of this any more.'”

He said he had been avoiding Katya all day as Claudia asked the professional dancer about having to leave the show ahead of the semi-finals.

Clearly emotional, Katya said: “It’s quite hard to talk right now, I am not going to lie. But I have loved absolutely every moment of us creating magic on the dance floor.”

She turned to Nigel and shared: “I know your parents would be very proud of you and I hope you got something out of this that I hope you would cherish forever.”

Katya ended up breaking down in tears as Casualty star Nigel paid tribute to her, adding: “You challenge me, you push me and you support me. You make me laugh.”

In response, he added: “Most of all, you are just part of me now – and I can’t even look at you.”

As their highlight reel was played to BBC viewers, the Russian dancer continued to cry and rest her head on Nigel.

Earlier today, BBC spokesperson said: “Unfortunately Nigel has sustained an injury which means he is unable to perform in tonight’s show and has had to withdraw from Strictly.”

The former EastEnders star suffered a rib injury, the broadcaster later said.

Following his exit, hosts Claudia and Tess Daly announced there would be no elimination or public vote.

During the episode, Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzim secured a perfect score of 40 for their Moulin Rougue-inspired routine, which was the first of the series.

Strictly Come Dancing returns next Saturday evening on BBC One.
