Reporter who broke real-life Jeffrey Dahmer case exposes inaccuracies in Monster

The reporter who broke the story of the case of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer has spoken out about the Netflix series Monster.

Journalist and author Anne E. Schwartz first broke the story in the Milwaukee Journal in 1991, and went on to write about the murders in a best-selling book.

Now she’s spoken out about the Ryan Murphy true crime series, which has been received positively by audiences but not without significant criticism.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Rita Isbell, sister of 19-year-old Dahmer victim Errol Lindsay, had accused the series of ‘retraumatised’ her family.

Now Schwartz has said that the series has used ‘artistic license’ to tell its story, and that it does not bear much resemblance to the true history.

Speaking to The Independent, she said: ‘I had trouble with [buying into the series], because I knew that [it] was not accurate.

‘In the first five minutes of the first episode you have (Dalmer’s neighbour) Glenda Cleveland knocking on his door. None of that ever happened.’

In the series, many of the police officers are depicted as racist and homophobic, implying that the case went unsolved because it was not taken seriously.

But Schwartz believes that the 10-part drama does not paint an honest picture of what really happened.

She said: ‘I’ve spent a lot of time with people who were at the scene. This is a dramatisation, but at a time when it is not exactly easy for law enforcement to get trust.’

Dahmer, who is played by Evan Peters in the series, murdered 17 young men in Milwaukee between 1978 and 1991, when he was finally captured by police.

He is said to have carefully selected victims so that any disappearances would not raise alarm bells – this enabled him to continue his spree for so long.

Dahmer was killed in prison in 1994.

While working as a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal, Schwartz received a call from police who said they’d found human remains in Dahmer’s residence.

She broke the story shortly afterwards and, in 1991, published a best-selling novel about the case entitled The Man Who Could Not Kill Enough.

The book was updated and re-released in 2021.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is available to stream on Netflix.
