RICHARD Hammond has revealed the secret rules of Top Gear – and how all of them were broken.

The TV presenter, 53, fronted the popular BBC One motoring programme alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May.

All three hosted the programme from its reboot in 2002 until 2015.

And how Richard has revealed the secret rules that were set when they began presenting.

Recalling how Top Gear's concept was created, he said: “We just thought we’d make a car show, I remember the conversation in White City BBC HQ.

“It was before James (May) joined but the rest of us were all in place and weirdly some of the people we still work with now, we were all in that room."

He continued to Steven Bartlett's Diary of a CEO podcast: “We all said, ‘right, these are the grand rules of Top Gear, it’s about the real world, cars that people really buy, no supercars, no foreign travel, we’re only going to drive proper cars that people buy in this country’.

“Then, that didn’t last very long at all, we realised that’s not what people wanted. Not what we wanted to make, we never made it with any science or calculation, we just made the best car show we could.”

Following Hammond's departure alongside Clarkson and May Top Gear has had a number of hosts since.

It's currently presented by Paddy McGuinness, Freddie Flintoff and Chris Harris.

However, its future is in doubt since Freddie's devastating car crash during filming.

The former England cricket ace, 45, was airlifted to hospital with severe facial injuries and broken ribs following the horror smash two months ago.

His open-topped car flipped over and slid along the track.
