BAFTAS: Rob and Romesh mock Holly and Phil with joke

Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis have opened up to Express.co.uk about narrating the reboot of the 1980s Japanese gameshow Takeshi’s Castle for UK viewers.

They are both self-proclaimed fans of the whacky series which sees dozens of contestants attempt to make it past Takeshi’s guards to get into his castle.

The series used to be narrated by Craig Charles, but Tom and Romesh have stepped into his shoes for the revival.

However, Romesh admitted he struggles to watch, or in this case, listen to himself back on television programmes.

He explained: “We’ve obviously seen the shows we were commentating, but we haven’t seen it with our voices on.

“I’ll probably mute it if I’m honest,” he admitted while breaking into laughter.

He continued: “Now, I’m excited to sit and watch it, it’ll be a fun thing to watch.”

Reflecting on the original series, which is not too dissimilar from the 2023 reboot, Romesh explained: “A lot of people have a relationship with watching it from back in the day.

“And so I think that that kind of nostalgia fest is something that people are into at the moment.

“Tom and I were so excited to be asked to do it and also on top of that, the reaction online to it coming back – it’s been amazing,

“I think a lot of people are sort of looking forward to just kind of going back to that and going back to those memories, but seeing it, you know, seeing a new version of that.”

As in the previous series of Takeshi’s Castle, more than 100 contestants attempt to storm the impenetrable castle by fighting off guards, giant foam mushrooms and devils.

Only the luckiest and bravest can make it through to take on Takeshi himself in the final showdown and potentially bank one million yen.
