Shane MacGowan’s wife speaks on the support she’s received
Victoria Mary Clarke shared how she and her late husband Shane MacGown spent his last days watching The Crown together despite the Fairytale of New York singer being an Irish nationalist.
Victoria shared with Good Morning Britain viewers: “The biggest fear you probably have is losing a loved one and it’s going to happen.
“You can’t really get around it, we are all going to lose a loved one and I know that for me, I spent at least 35 years worrying about Shane.
“He pushed the boundaries of so much of what humans can do to their bodies. And so I dreaded that and I thought I’d fall apart – I thought I would die and not be able to speak.”
She added: “I just want you all to know it’s not as bad as you think it is going to be and there is a huge amount of love that comes your way when you lose someone, which you didn’t really expect.”

Victoria went on to explain how introverted she and her late husband were in recent years, telling viewers they spent his final days watching the Netflix series The Crown which is a fictional drama about the British Royal Family under Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
“We didn’t really go out and we didn’t know what was going on in the outside world very much,” she said. “We had a very quiet life, but a very happy life.”
“We didn’t want anything else, we just wanted to sit there together watching television.”

She later explained how she was overwhelmed by all of the support she had received following her husband’s death.
Shane died on November 30, in Dublin, Ireland aged 65 years old from pneumonia, according to The New York Times.
Confirming his death in a statement last month, Victoria wrote: “Shane will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life”.
The singer had suffered a range of health issues in recent years. Earlier last month, he was treated at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin for an infection.
Some of Shane’s songs were influenced by Irish nationalism, but his wife recently said he loved the Royal Family, saying it was something “people would not expect”.
Victoria told BBC Radio 4’s Today show: “We both enjoyed watching programmes about royalty, we watched a lot of documentaries, obviously the funerals.
“He cried when Prince Philip died, he cried when the Queen died, he cried when Diana died, he thought a lot about the Royal Family, but he was an ardent republican.”
