Shetland fans all make the same complaint as finale airs So many loose ends

Shetland: Howell attempts to escape Calder and Tosh

Shetland fans were mainly in agreement as the series finale aired on Wednesday, with several complaining about too many “red herrings” and “loose ends”. The popular crime drama saw a big change in this series as DI Ruth Calder (played by Ashley Jensen) replaced DI Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall).

While the series threw many curveballs and plot twists at viewers, the final episode failed to deliver in the eyes of some fans. Several stories were finally wrapped up, the most important being the mystery of who murdered Ellen Quinn (Maisie Norma Seaton).

It turns out the young woman whose death the police force were investigating was killed by her father, Kieran Quinn (Barry O’Connor). After weeks of bewildering dead ends, it was revealed Kieran snapped after finding out from Ellen that she wasn’t his daughter.

It came as Kieran found Ellen, who had recently run away from Shetland to London but had returned.

He pleaded with her to stay and the pair ended up going on a drive, where Ellen confided in him about the mess she had stumbled into.

When he decided to take her to the police station, she delivered the shocking bombshell and taunted him about how her uncle Bobby Bain (Russ Bain) was her real father.

Kieran snapped and strangled Ellen, and tearfully made his confession to Ruth in the latest instalment.

However, fans weren’t all pleased by the conclusion to the mystery, with many complaining the other subplots were all unnecessary red herrings.

@SpiderElectron asked: “@BBCScotland Why does #Shetland have to be so convoluted and difficult to follow? Won’t be watching next series.”

“#Shetland … what a total pile of s***e… I’ve watched every season but this one was dire … bad plot, bad writing, really REALLY bad acting … the villain was obvs in ep one… now they’re calling shetland miserable and inbred ffs… lovely for tourism,” @magentawolf fumed.

However, others praised the drama on its ending and hoped for more in the future, with @ifeelflames sharing: “Def not my favourite series, but the last 2 eps were pretty good.

“I confess to missing Jimmy & Duncan a lot. I’d grown very fond of their found family set up with Cassie.

“Removing that has taken away something that’s not yet been replaced for me. B***dy love Tosh though #Shetland.”

@NationwideBlog penned: “#Shetland #BBC THAT was DYNAMITE!!! One of the best TV Drama Episodes I have ever seen. It built – every week. Terrific Cast. Excellent Script. Nice wee locations. And The BAFTAs go to……”
