SHETLAND VIEWERS were confused during the latest episode of the BBC drama as they questioned Lloyd Anderson's offbeat American accent.

Series seven recently got underway with the beloved Douglas Henshall back as Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez as he investigated a crime on Shetland for the last time.

This time, new faces have been introduced, including American artist Lloyd Anderson (played by Patrick Robinson), but viewers were confused as to why the BBC didn’t cast an American actor for the role, instead.

Episode four of Shetland saw the DI issue a warrant for Connor’s arrest after the explosion last week.

The team spoke to people connected to him to see if he has any extremist beliefs, including his former American drawing tutor Lloyd, who admits he doesn’t believe Connor is capable of committing that sort of crime.

But after hearing the British actor speak, viewers were very distracted by the former Casualty star's choice of accent.

Fans were seriously distracted by the actors odd American twang and took to social media to share how they were feeling.

One viewer said: “Surely the character doesn’t need to sound like he’s in a bad B-Western.”

Another wrote: “I don’t get why they didn’t just get an American actors?”

“What is this weird accent, it’s so off-putting,” quipped another.

“Why is no one talking about Patrick Robinson’s terrible American accent.” another viewer echoed.

UK viewers know Patrick from popular shows like, The Bill and Casualty, where he had long-running roles.

Along with Patrick making an appearance in the BBC drama this series, viewers will also see Shauna MacDonald and former EastEnders actress Laurie Brett.

Douglas had nothing but kind words to say about their appearance in the series along with all the other famous faces viewers have seen throughout the years.

He told BBC: “One of the great good fortunes of Shetland is we’ve had so many great guests to come in over the years, and Shauna, Laurie and Patrick have done an amazing job in this new series.
