Earlier this month, Shetland fans were left in tears after Jimmy Perez (Played by Douglas Henshall) solved his last-ever murder. It was also an emotional moment for the detective and his colleagues, who were stunned by his decision to leave. However, before he said his final farewell, Jimmy handed the baton over to a very tearful Tosh (Alison O’Donnell).

Douglas may have left his role as Jimmy, but he has gone on to star in a new play in London.

Sharing the exciting news with his Twitter followers, the actor penned: “Back in London to start work on the phenomenal new play by Rona Munro “Mary” directed by Roxana Silbert at Hampstead Theatre. Come and see it if you can.”

Douglas’ news delighted his fans, and many were quick to reply wishing him good luck.

Jan Sanders wrote: “Tickets bought, airline tickets purchased, and might start packing now! This is great news. So glad you’re going back to the theatre!” (sic)

Helen Wright replied: “I have already booked – picked up the hint in the Radio Times – really excited.”

“Good luck,” Valerie said as Val Leonard added: “Good luck on your new adventure. Lots of tears after the last episode of Shetland. Just wondering what the next season will be like x.”

“Man, that sounds worth getting on a plane,” Nancy Wright commented.

Chris tweeted: “Wishing you all the best, you deserve that, and I truly wish we could, we won’t be back in London until at least next year, unfortunately…I do hope we get the opportunity to see you in live theatre next time we’re there. (Friendly Nana wave).” (sic)

Douglas’ departure may have come as a shock to fans, but for him, he had been thinking about it for some time.

“I had a conversation with David Kane asking how many series we had left in us,” the actor began.

“We thought if we could get two more series, we could probably wrap up Perez’s story and wrap up the show in a way that was satisfactory for both us and the audience.”

“But it was preferable to be told that we were not going to do it anymore because it had run its course,” he continued to Radio Times.

“Nor did I want to keep coming back and taking the pay cheque. I feel very comfortable with the decision I made.”

The actor went on to admit that he was going to miss his character Jimmy a lot.

The grand finale of series seven wrapped up with Jimmy confessing his true feelings to Meg.

The pair embraced in the detective’s final scenes after Jimmy told Meg he had quit his job.

BBC bosses haven’t officially confirmed who will take Douglas’ place as lead detective, but Douglas’ sweet exit also means that he could end up making a return in the future.

They also announced at the end of series seven that they would soon be filming for series eight.

It is unclear when the new episodes will air, but if the series follows suit, it will be shown in August 2023.

Shetland is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and Britbox.
