Shirley Ballas discusses Strictly dance off
Shirley Ballas has defended her decision to save Angela Scanlon in the dance-off on Sunday’s episode of Strictly Come Dancing.
All three judges opted to save Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin meaning they were safe, and despite Angela and Carlos Gu losing out, Shirley still threw the pair a vote.
The 63-year-old was asked about the situation while appearing on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain and explained why she chose to save Angela, 39.
She explained: “I felt that Angela stuck to the rules. The rules were that it was a cha cha cha and that’s what she did exquisitely well, and Layton is an absolutely marvellous dancer from day one, from day one he’s been brilliant.
“But it’s supposed to be an American Smooth and in my opinion, it didn’t hit the rules. I’m very much a rule follower.”

Going into more detail about the dance-off, the BBC star added: “She was amazing. I loved, that it was all authentic cha cha cha, the leg action was absolutely superb.
“But like I said, both couples are very gifted so we have to honour the other three judges who chose to save him.”
Fans were left unhappy with the result and took to social media to brand the show as a “fix”.
After her exit from the competition, Angela broke down in tears during an appearance on the spin-off show It Takes Two on Monday evening.

Angela was joined on the sofa by her dance partner Carlos as the pair discussed the show and watched their highlight reel back.
The television presenter found it a bit too much and was reduced to tears as she watched the sweet montage back.
The Irish-native was comforted by an emotional Carlos as the pair struggled to keep it together.
The mum-of-two explained to host Fleur East: “You can have a steady road, either middle of the road, or you can have quite a smooth journey and I have always felt those ups and downs are better for you to feel things deeply.”
Strictly Come Dancing continues at 7:25pm on Saturday on BBC One.
